Mission Statement
Mindful of the physical, mental, social and spiritual needs of each individual, the Management and Staff aim to provide wholesome and professional care based on the concept of the dignity of the human person in a happy home-away-from-home, welcoming and safe environment for our residents.Dromcollogher Respite Centre was the brainchild of local man Seamus Stack. In the late 1990’s it became evident to Seamus that there was a great need for respite care facilities in the County Limerick and North Cork region.
Driven by his belief that a proportion of older people suffer from rural isolation, poverty, social exclusion, a vulnerability to crime and health problems and experience of a lack of access to a range of social services and contacts the idea of a Respite Care Centre was born.
Seamus’s vision and determination inspired the community and with the backing of a fund raising committee and the support of the local community the idea quickly got off the ground motivating Seamus to approach Government Ministers, Health Boards and the private sector for further support.
Despite many challenges and obstacles posed by various authorities the Respite Care Centre opened in 2002 and was the first of its kind in the country – a community based, community driven, stand alone facility where the older person could avail of temporary care, allowing their family/primary carers a break.
The centre has attracted huge appreciation from families and relatives for the level of care provided in a home away from home atmosphere. Residents are welcomed to come on repeat visits.
The Respite Care Centre is making a valid and valuable contribution towards helping the older person to remain in their own homes, within their own communities for as long as possible – living independent lives with some assistance from both statutory and voluntary community services.
“The people we look after are the generation that built Ireland and made it the country it is through very hard times and by making an awful lot of of sacrifices so we only want to give those people the very best at this stage of their lives and Dromcollogher Respite Centre is renowned for doing just that.”
Seamus Stack, Founder of Dromcollogher & District Respite Care Centre
